Cherilyn Tan is a musician-improviser, community-centered designer, and facilitator, originally from Malaysia, based in New York. Grounded in deep listening, her practice seeks to facilitate deepened presence and relations across time, memory and space, to move towards collective healing and liberatory worldbuilding.

As a pianist, she has played across a range of genres, from classical, latin jazz, to free/experimental improv, and more, including the Sun Ra Ensemble led by Ahmed Abdullah, and the Indian Ensemble led by Samir Chatterjee. She performs voice and electronics, live sound for performance, plays the flute, and writes songs. Her recent projects, such as the body, remembers, weave together voice-movement improvisation, somatic research, field recordings and electronics, grappling with themes of home, disconnection, grief and diasporic fractures. 

As an interdisciplinary collaborator, Cherilyn works across mediums and textures, which take the forms of multisensorial and sound art installations, experimental video/projection pieces, improvisational and devised performances, site-specific and theatre-based works. She is interested in exploring experimental forms of sound, performance and instrument-making as channels for sonic liberation and accessing otherwise-imperceptible archives. Currently, Cherilyn facilitates attention practices at the Strother School of Radical Attention.
